AFRICAN IMMIGRANT ORGANIZATIONS HOST IFTAR FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS
Local organizations step up to provide a sense of home for many asylum seekers who are celebrating this holy month alone for the first time.
NEW YORK, NY. - On Thursday, April 5, 2024, immigrant rights organization, African Communities Together and the Africa Center, hosted an iftar meal for a group of asylum seekers celebrating Ramadan. The iftar was held at the Africa Center’s Harlem location on the corner of 5th Avenue and 110th Street, across the street from Central Park. Over 50 African asylum seekers attended the event and staff of both organizations served food as it was time to break their fast.
For the last two years, African Communities Together has been a resource for many African asylum seekers. The African-led organization provides direct services, including legal consultations and other social services, as well as political education to empower asylum seekers to advocate for their rights. In November of 2023, African Communities Together co-led a rally outside Gracie Mansion in support of the historic right-to-shelter mandate. Despite the recent settlement on the right to shelter, the organization is continuing to fight the Mayor’s “crusade” against asylum seekers.
“...the Mayor should be leading the way in finding solutions. Solutions like vouchers, hotel and office conversions, and more state and federal funding,” ACT Executive Director Amaha Kassa said.
