On August 4, ACT members met at a new location for the first time. Monthly meetings will now take place at the Garden of Eden Associates Community Room, 2211 Frederick Douglass Blvd (entrance on 119th Street, across from Patisserie Les Ambassades). The new location is larger, with more room for our growing membership!
Alex Alvarez from the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs spoke to ACT members about language access and their right to translation in City schools, hospitals, and other services. If you or someone you know is denied services in your language, you can call 311 to make a complaint. Contact ACT if you need help to do so.
Meanwhile, ACT will continue the fight to expand NYC’s language access policy and services to include French and African languages. Organizer Akinde Kodjo introduced members to the Language Access Survey, which asks about experiences with City services and what needs to be improved. Contact ACT to take the Language Access Survey and share your thoughts about how the City can make services more accessible for Africans.
Aicha Bamba from the office of the City Council Member Ritchie Torres (D-15, Bronx) explained to ACT members about the services offered by City Council offices, including support with immigration and family law. Aicha also discussed the importance of the African community advocating if it wants better services, and offered herself as a resource for ACT members.
Finally, ACT held a graduation ceremony for eight of our Community Interpreters who graduated from the NY Certified interpreter certification and training programs. Congratulations to the graduates for their hard work and service to the community!
Save the Date!
